What Is a Light Stand Boom Pole?

A light stand boom pole is a horizontal arm that mounts on a light stand to extend a light, microphone or accessory away from the base.

It lets you light from overhead without a stand showing up in the shot: a key light above a face, a softbox over a product table or a hair light behind your subject.

The longer and stiffer the arm, the farther your light can reach without sagging. That's where a heavy-duty boom makes all the difference.

120" of Reach, Collapses to 68"

SHAPE Heavy-Duty boom pole fully extended to 120 inches

The SHAPE boom features two telescoping sections. Fully extended, it reaches 120" (304.8 cm). Collapsed, it measures just 68" (172.7 cm).

This means you can go from a tight interior to a large stage without changing gear, and it still fits easily in a grip truck or van.

Heavy-Duty 33 lb Payload

The boom supports up to 33 lb (15 kg) at 68" and 22 lb (10 kg) at 120" when balanced with proper counterweights.

That's enough to fly a powerful LED fixture, a large softbox or a heavy light modifier with confidence.

Spring-Loaded Anti-Tilt Ratchet Wheel

What truly sets this boom apart is its center spring-loaded ratchet wheel mechanism.

Engineered to reduce effort when tightening with a wrench, it allows smooth, controlled adjustments. Thanks to its anti-tilt design, the boom stays stable even without a sandbag at the end of the pole.

The result: faster setups, safer operation and more reliable positioning during critical shots.

Universal Junior-to-Baby Compatibility

The boom fits male 1⅛" (junior) to female 5/8" (baby) receivers.

At the top, a universal 1⅛" junior Posi-V-Lock female receiver is paired with an adjustable 5/8" baby stud, ensuring broad compatibility with industry-standard fixtures and grip accessories.

Built with Professional Durability

Like all SHAPE gear, this boom is built to last on demanding productions.

Constructed from premium black chrome stainless steel and reinforced steel tubing, it provides exceptional rigidity under load. Aluminum collar locks secure every adjustment, even with heavier fixtures.

To eliminate downtime, every adjustment point uses captive knobs, so no parts are ever lost on set.

How to Rig Your Boom Arm Safely

A loaded boom shifts your stand's center of gravity. Follow these steps every time:

1. Use a sturdy junior stand and spread the legs fully, with the high leg pointing toward the load.
2. Mount the boom in the stand's receiver and tighten the knob.
3. Attach your fixture to the Posi-V-Lock receiver or the 5/8" baby stud.
4. Hang a counterweight on the opposite end to balance the load.
5. Set the angle with the center ratchet, then lock the aluminum collars.
6. Weigh down the stand's base with sandbags.
7. Dress your cables along the boom and stand so nothing pulls on the load.

Sandbags and carabiner hooks are sold separately.
